New Cover Reveals: THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS

Ahh! Breaking news! The new book covers to Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments is here! I'm so excited!

This use to be a series of 5 separate posts, which I have now consolidated into one massive post. That being said, this is quite long, so I'll just give you them all first, and then have my own thoughts about them under the cut.

Okay? Great! Now, may I present to you the new covers of The Mortal Instruments!

And the spines, put together, will look like this:
And there you have it! The new covers! They'll be available in stores September 1st, 2015, so if you haven't read them yet, be sure to pick them up!

Rest of my thoughts will be under the cut :)

Official blurb of City of Bones (first book)courtesy of Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/256683.City_of_Bones

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

City of Bone

I actually did a cover reveal of this a while ago, when the redos were first announced. You can see it here.

City of Ashes
In comparison to the old one:
This being the first cover revealed, I am super excited!

Thoughts:
1. I'm happy that they chose to stick with the general themes of the old cover, with the main feature being Clary and the main color being blue!
2. Clary is wearing Shadowhunting gear. That's really neat, but at the same time, the first time Clary wears gear is in City of Glass, so that's not quite true to the book. But her clothes do make her look more badass.
4. She has runes on her skin!
5. Why is she sitting down? I think I preferred the original pose on the old cover. She doesn't look as fierce on the new cover...
6. Why is the tip of the steele shooting out sparks? For new readers, the steele might even look a little bit like a wand... I mean, the steele is described as a thin wand-like instrument, but at first glance, the book might be mistaken for a story about witches and wizards. Sure, they're in it, but they're not the main characters. (Okay, Magnus Bane is, but he's not one of the main characters in the first few books)

My final word? I think I like them both. They're both good in their own ways. What do you guys think?

City of Glass
Comparison:
Hmm, I'm not too sure about this one. For starters, who is on the cover of the new one? At first glance, I thought it was a girl, and upon seeing the lack of runes on the model's skin, my immediate thought was Maia. Then I was thinking it was Sebastian, as he's on the old covers, but Sebastian has black/white-blonde hair. Now I'm hearing a lot of people say it's Simon, so I'm simply going to nod and go with it.

My Thoughts:
1. Simon isn't very pro-active on this cover... He's kind of just sitting there. Oookay.
2. It doesn't exactly scream what genre it is. This is a fantasy book, so shouldn't he have a weapon or something equally cool to make him badass?
3. Is it just me, or is the rune in the background cut off?
4. What's with the random line on the ground?
5. Where's Sebastian?

City of Glass was my favorite of the entire series, and it's also the final book of the first major arc/intended trilogy. I was hoping the new cover of this book would be a little more epic... But oh well. What do you guys think?

City of Fallen Angels
Thoughts:
1. Doesn't Isabelle look badass? From her stance to her ripped jeans, she definitely gets an A in being badass!
2. Love the subtle shift from grey to green on the cover.
3. Anyone notice how the tip of her whip is split?
4. She has her ruby necklace!
5. So fierce!
6. Isabelle definitely has a big role in this book. She helps Clary a lot on her relationship to Jace. And we get to know the emotional turmoil her has...

I think I like this cover! That being said, I might be a little biased, as the old book cover was the one I liked the least. Thoughts?

City of Lost Souls
Oh my. Hello, Alec :)
1. Did I mention Alec? I did. Wow. He's just as amazing as his sister, Isabelle, on these covers. That stance. Love it!
2. I got to wonder...does Alec ever really fight with his bow in this book?
3. Both the old and new cover have a grey theme going on
4. So many runes on his arms :)
5. I'm saddened by the lack of scenery, though. I particularly liked the bridge on the old cover. But scenery isn't exactly a theme with the new covers...
6. The new cover really depicts the action of the novel, rather than the romance on the old one.

This new cover has my approval. Though I still do like the old one, if only for the bridge.

City of Heavenly Fire
Last but not least! I actually still remember all the hype that went on around here when the old cover was released. That wasn't too long ago, now that I think about it.

Anyways.
1. Sebastian has wings. But doesn't that put him in the position of an angel?
2. Heavenly fire everywhere!!! And we all know that plays a significant part to the plot...
3. Both the mortal sword and the cup are in hand! But the fact that it's in Sebastian's hands is a little troubling...
4. The old cover had both Clary and Sebastian, who were the main driving forces.
5. I think the scenery on the old cover was pretty important, though...
6. Having both Clary and Sebastian on the cover really said a lot about the strained relationship between those two, and the importance of it...
7. Sebastian really does look like he might be in pain. Or agony. Comes with being a bad guy, no?

Hmm. I'm not sure which one I like better. I guess both?

And that's it! Overall, the majority of the new covers are to my liking. However, I still do like the old covers, as it reveals more aspects of the book. Will I be buying these new covers? No. That's because I already own a copy of this series, with the old covers, and I don't need another set. That won't stop me from going to the stores to find them, thought!

What do you guys think? Love them? Hate them? Indifferent? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I think the new covers are pretty awesome, but I agree I enjoy the old covers more but that could just be due to my nostalgia of reading them with the old covers.

    1. Yes, I completely agree! I've read the books over and over again with the old covers, so I can't really image myself reading them with the new covers. They still look pretty, though! And thanks for dropping by :)
