I have the absolute pleasure of interviewing the one and only Jessica Peterson on my blog today, the author of the Study Abroad series! The first book, Spanish Lessons, is absolutely phenomenal (read my review here). I'm currently reading the second novel, Lessons in Gravity, and it is equally as amazing! This post has two parts: an interview and an excerpt, and you don't want to miss any part of this! You guys ready? Because I'm beyond excited! Let's get started!
Vivian Bingley has big plans for her semester abroad in Spain…
Along with her BFF, Maddie, Vivian hopes to indulge her inner Art History nerd by visiting the best museums in the world. She also wants to tackle more practical concerns—like a less than stellar GPA in her major, Economics—with the help of a Spanish tutor.
But falling for her studly Spanish tutor definitely isn't one of them.
Madrileño Rafa Montoya is the stuff study abroad dreams are made of: super studly and super smart. He also happens to be super into Vivian. With his wicked dancing skills and his passion for the arts, he tempts her to throw caution to the wind and live out her wildest dreams.
Only problem? Maddie wants Rafa, too, and Vivian promised herself she’d never settle for second best again…not after a hookup-gone-awry last semester left her heartbroken. Is it best for Vivian to protect her heart at all costs? Or is letting Rafa in worth the risk?
This book is a New Adult contemporary romance, suitable for mature audiences.

~Interview~
1. Hi Jessica, and welcome to my blog! Thank you so much for agreeing to do this interview with me. I'm absolutely honoured! First off, can you tell me a bit about yourself, and what got you into writing?
Hi Erika! Thank YOU for having me - I am so excited to chat with you today. So my name is Jessica Peterson, and I write fun, sexy historical and New Adult romance. I am a pretty solid introvert, so growing up I spent a lot of time reading books. It wasn't long before I discovered romance, which quickly became my genre of choice. I started writing my first romance at the ripe age of sixteen (I was dorky, pimply, and had braces; needless to say, I dreamed a LOT about the cute boys in school falling in love with me!). I didn't start writing seriously until I was in my mid-twenties, however.
2. What inspired you to write your Study Abroad series?
I studied abroad in Madrid my junior year in college. It was such a magical time for me. I found the old world fascinating - no surprise, considering I'm a huge history buff! - and I fell in love with Spain. I've always wanted to write a study abroad series, and after reading some pretty amazing New Adult this past year, I decided to give it a go!
3. Your novel includes some amazingly lush descriptions of places in Spain, as well as mentions of some famous Spanish artists. Did you have to do any kind of specific research for these?
During my semester in Spain, I took an amazing art class on Spanish artists. It was so cool to have a lecture on Sorolla in the morning, and then go and see his work that afternoon in a museum. It blew my mind.
4. Describe Vivian and Rafa each in three words.
I love questions like these. Let's see...
Vivian: passionate, careful, artsy
Rafa: smart, care-free, HOT!
5. Where did you get the inspiration for Vivian and Rafa's characters? Any part of them based off real people?
So I said in the author's note at the end of SPANISH LESSONS that Viv is probably the most autobiographical character I've ever written. I was also acutely aware of my competitive classmates' accomplishments and ambitions. I also succumbed to the pressure of keeping up with them. But unlike Viv, I didn't get to make out with cute Spaniards while I studied abroad (not for lack of trying!).
And Rafa was my attempt to create a swoon-worthy hero. I took a writing workshop a few years ago given by Elizabeth Hoyt. She posits that it's really, really important to get your hero "right" for a romance to work well, and I couldn't agree more. I used her tips and tricks for creating that awesome hero, and I hope it worked!
6. What books did you grow up reading? Which ones are your favorite?
Yikes, so many to choose from. I read GONE WITH THE WIND several times. I also love anything Rainbow Rowell and any and all historical romances - Christina Dodd was my first historical author I read. Jane Austen is a favorite, of course, and when I discovered Philippa Gregory I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.
7. Where is your dream vacation? (My guess is Madrid!)
Ha! I would love to go back to Madrid, although I AM a little nervous it won't be the same as how I remember it from my time abroad. Everything is just so magical and romantic when you're twenty. When you're a bit older, not so much! Right now I'd really love to check out Scotland and Ireland. I went to London for the first time a few years back, and it turned me into such a huge fan of the UK/British Isles.
8. Do you have a specific writing schedule you stick to? Any necessities when writing (music/silence, specific time of day, etc.)?
So I read Stephen King's ON WRITING, which completely changed the way I approached the process. Before, I would wait for my muse to sing before I sat down to write. Needless to say, I didn't write often. King writes 2,000 words a day, every day, whether he feels like it or not. I started doing that, and I finally finished a book. It's not always pretty, but it works.
I usually can't write with music, unless I'm writing a super romantic (read: kissing or sex) scene. Then music is a must! I also love to create a playlist before I begin writing a new book - something that captures the mood of my WIP. I'll listen to that as I brainstorm.
9. Can you offer any advice for aspiring writers?
Pursue your craft fearlessly. If it's what you want to do, commit to it. Track down mentors, make friends with other writers, attend every workshop and lecture and class you can afford. And be smart about your options - if you're writing romance especially, don't rule out self-publishing. It's tough, but it could be the best choice for you.
10. Any further works we can look forward to?
Yes! I am currently working on book #3 of the Study Abroad series. I FINALLY get to write a super hot footballer (soccer) hero! I've wanted to write this guy for a while. He's a studly Welshman with tats, a ban-bun, and a serious case of hots for the heroine. It's going to be a good one!
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer my questions, Jessica! I really appreciate it and I can't wait to read more of your works!
Thanks again for having me, and happy reading!

~About the Author~
Jessica Peterson began reading romance to escape the decidedly unromantic awkwardness of her teenage years. Having found solace in the likes of Mr. Darcy, Jamie Fraser (OMG love the gingers!), and Edward Cullen, it wasn’t long before she began creating tall, dark and handsome heroes of her own.
She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband, Mr. Peterson, and her smelly Goldendoodle Martha Bean.

SPANISH LESSONS (Study Abroad #1) ExcerptCopyright 2016 by Jessica PetersonHerds of scantily-dressed people, heels clomping against the cobblestones, filter past us. They laugh and smoke, and a few couples even put on a show, fondling each other like they mean it. I look up; the sky has faded to grey, just light enough to make out wisps of cloud scudding overhead.Rafa checks his watch. His skin glows in the soft light.
